About the East European Shepherd

The East European Shepherd is a large service shepherd developed in the Soviet Union from German Shepherds imported in the 1920s–30s; its first standard dates from 1955. Bigger and heavier-boned than its German ancestor, it has a dense medium-length coat in black, black-and-tan, saddle or wolf grey. Balanced, confident and easy to train, it was bred for guard and service work and is a devoted, protective companion that needs daily exercise and a job to do.
